Strawberry Agua Fresca
What is Agua Fresca?
Agua Fresca is a classic Mexican drink that means “fresh water” in English. It’s a refreshing beverage made by blending fruits, water, and sweetener, and sometimes adding lime juice. This beverage is a popular choice in regions with warm climates, particularly in Mexico and other Latin American countries. This drink is best served cold over ice offering a refreshing and energizing sensation.
If you want to enjoy a refreshing Agua Fresca, blend fresh fruits with water. Some popular fruit options for this drink include watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango, and strawberries. For this particular recipe, I will be using fresh strawberries.
Ingredients:
Strawberry: In this recipe, I used fresh strawberries, but you can use frozen if you prefer. With their naturally sweet flavor, you won’t need to add sugar.
Milk: I recommend using evaporated milk to add creaminess, although whole milk can also work.
Sweetener: To sweeten the drink, I used condensed milk, but you can use any sweetener such as sugar, honey, or even stevia.
Water: Water serves as the liquid base and provides hydration.
For a tangy taste and refreshing twist, you can add a small amount of lime or citrus juice (optional).
Ice and Garnishes: Agua Fresca is served over ice to keep it cool. It can be garnished with fruit slices and mint leaves.
Tips
- When selecting strawberries for your drink, look for bright red ones that are plump and fragrant. Using high-quality ingredients is important, as the flavor and sweetness of the strawberries will have an impact on the overall taste of the drink.
- If you’re using frozen strawberries, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand. Simply blend them a little longer with the water. When using frozen strawberries, you might not need to use too much ice.
- To ensure that your strawberries are clean, rinse them under cold water or soak them for a few minutes before patting them dry with a paper towel.
- For the best taste, I recommended putting ice directly into the glass rather than the pitcher. Also, to improve the flavor and appearance of the drink, fresh sliced strawberries can be added just before serving.
- This strawberry drink can be refrigerated for a maximum of three days, but it is best to drink it within 24-48 hours for the best taste and freshness.
How to Make Creamy Strawberry Agua Fresca
The first step is to clean the strawberries: Wash the strawberries under running cold water. I like to add baking soda first and rinse them many times. Adding baking soda and even white vinegar will help remove the pesticide from the fruit. When washing strawberries, I find it helpful to use a salad spinner. The strainer part can be pulled up, making the washing process easier.
Next, hull the strawberries. Pull back the leaves of the fruits to show the stem, and then using a pairing knife cut around it to remove the green leafy top.
Dice the strawberries and reserve about 1/2 cup to use as garnish. Place the strawberries in a blender along with 3 cups of water. Blend for 1-2 minutes at high speed, or until the strawberries are pureed.
Strain the strawberry mixture. Straining the strawberry mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any seeds or pulp will result in a smooth and clear agua fresca.
Then, combine the strawberry mixture with the evaporated milk, and condensed milk. Mix until well incorporated.
Add the reserved strawberries and get your glasses ready to enjoy a delicious creamy drink. Serve with lots of ice. I have these cute ice cube trays and I like to add small pieces of strawberries and mints to the water to make the ice. I think it adds a fun delicate look to the drink.
Finally, for a burst of color and flavor, add some fresh sliced strawberries to the drink before serving.
This Creamy Strawberry Agua Fresca is an easy recipe that both kids and adults will love. So definitely give it a try!
