Carne Guisada is part of a traditional meal in the Dominican Republic. This beef stew is frequently combined with Fluffy white rice and creamy homemade beans. The combination of the three is called “La Bandera Dominicana” (Dominican flag). If you never had the opportunity to taste Carne Guisada, I highly encourage you to give this recipe a try. Just 4 simple steps!
Beef Stew Caribbean Style “Carne Guisada”
Every country in Latin America has its twist to this staple beef stew recipe. Today, I want to share my version of beef stew with you. This beef stew or Carne Guisada was always one of my mom’s go-to’s when I was a child. Since then, it has been one of my favorite dishes.
Ingredients:
- 1& 1/2 pounds Beef Sirloin (cubed cut)
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 red small bell pepper
- 1/2 green small bell pepper
- 1 jalapeno pepper (optional)
- 1 small red onion (diced)
- 1/2 cup olives, capers
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/3 teaspoon oregano
- 1/3 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 cups of water
- 1 tablespoon salt ( I use kosher salt)
- 1 bay leaf
How to make “Carne Guisada” Beef Stew Caribbean-Style:
The first step is to roughly chop the vegetables and set aside. Then, proceed to season the meat with 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1/3 teaspoon oregano, 1/3 teaspoon onion powder and 1 tablespoon salt, You can also add a tablespoon of my delicious and flavorful Sofrito (optional)
Next, in a non-stick pan, over medium-high heat, pour a teaspoon of oil. Place the beef cubes in the pan and let them cook for about 3 minutes each side. If the meat gets stuck to the pan when you try to flip, it means it’s not ready. Just patiently wait until it seamlessly releases off the pan.
Then, after the meat has lightly browned add 1 cup of tomato sauce, olives, red and green peppers, onion, 1 bay leaf
Lastly, add 2 cups of water, cover the pan, and lower heat to the lowest temperature. Continue cooking for about 40 minutes or until the meat is soft and tender.
*Undoubtedly, you can make this beef stew in your instant pot or slow cooker.
Pair this Carne Guisada with a side of Fluffy White Rice and a side salad Enjoy!
