Easy Homemade Artisan Bread Recipe

This Artisan Bread has a thick, chewy exterior and a soft interior.  The bread is perfect for dipping in soups, and stews. The recipe is so simple and easy to follow, and although there is some waiting time for the bread to rise, it’s worth it.

Let’s talk Ingredients:

To make this bread, you’ll need:

Flour: I like to use regular, all-purpose flour. It’s a very accessible flour and is used for all kinds of recipes. You can use bread flour and use the same amount as the all-purpose flour.

Yeast: use instant or rapid-rise yeast.

There are a few reasons why yeast is used when making bread.

Rising: It helps the dough rise and it gives the bread a fluffy texture.
Flavor: the yeast also contributes to the flavor of the bread.
Texture: it makes the bread light and airy.
Nutritious: the yeast adds some vitamins and nutrients to the bread

Other essential ingredients are:

Warm Water: Make sure your water reaches 115 F. You can use a kitchen thermometer, but if you do, it’s important for the water not to be too hot, which can kill the yeast. And for the contrary, if the water is too cold, the yeast might not activate at all.

Sugar: Although this is optional, adding a small amount can help the yeast activate more quickly.

Salt: To balance the flavor. Regular table salt works just fine.

How to make Artisan Bread at Home:

Combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a large mixing bowl.

Add lukewarm water and mix everything to form a rough, lumpy, and craggy dough.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit and rise in a warm environment until it doubles in size, about 2 hours.

After 2 hours, preheat the oven to 450°F with a Dutch oven inside (so the Dutch oven gets preheated as well). It is important to create a consistent baking environment for the bread, allowing it to bake evenly on all sides.

Place the dough onto a floured work surface. The dough will be sticky, this is normal, so dust it with some flour whenever needed; Knead the dough by folding it onto itself, turning, and repeating for 2–3 minutes until a tensive dough ball forms

Transfer to a proofing basket for bread I got mine from Amazon; here is the link, or you can use a parchment-lined bowl, cover, and let rise for 35 minutes or until the dough doubles in size.

Place the dough ball in the preheated Dutch oven lined with parchment and bake at 450°F for 30 minutes; reduce the oven temperature to 400°F, remove the lid, and bake for another 10-15 minutes. At this point, the longer you bake the bread, the crispier the crust will be. Of course, make sure it is not burning.

Enjoy!
