Avocado Spread Recipe

One important thing to know about me is that I absolutely love avocados and could eat them every day. I usually buy a bag with five or six of them which all seem to ripen at the same time. This can be challenging for me, especially since there are only a few people living in my house. To avoid wasting any, I like to make dishes such as Easy Avocado Tomatillo Salsa or These Stuffed Avocados. However, my current favorite is this Creamy Avocado Spread, which I invite you to try and enjoy its delicious creaminess. Made with ripe avocados, garlic, Greek yogurt, lime, cilantro, and a pinch of salt. Check out our step-by-step instructions and tips to create a smooth and flavorful avocado spread.

What type of avocado should I use to make this spread?

I use Hass avocados. These are the most popular varieties and are available year-round. To enjoy avocados at their best, it’s important to know how to select, store, and keep them fresh.

Choosing a perfectly ripe avocado can make all the difference in your culinary experience. Here are some Tips on how to pick a good avocado:

Look for skin color and texture: When it comes to checking if an avocado is ripe, the skin color alone may not be enough. A ripe avocado usually has dark green or blackish skin, but it’s best to gently press it to determine its texture.

Take into account the level of firmness: Give the avocado a gentle squeeze in the palm of your hand. It should yield slightly to gentle pressure without feeling overly mushy or too firm. Avoid avocados that are excessively soft or have noticeable indentations.

Check the stem: Carefully remove the small stem at the top of the avocado. If you find green underneath, it indicates that the avocado is ripe and ready to eat. If it’s brown or black, the avocado may be overripe or spoiled.

Assess the weight: A good avocado should feel heavy for its size. Heftiness often indicates that the fruit has a higher moisture content and is more likely to be ripe and creamy.

Consider the purpose: If you need avocado for immediate use, choose one that is ripe or slightly underripe. If you want avocados to ripen later, select ones that are firmer and less ripe.

Plan ahead: If you need avocados to be perfectly ripe on a specific day, buy avocados that are still firm and allow them to ripen at home. You can speed up the ripening process by placing them in a paper bag with a banana or apple.

I hope these tips help you choose a good Avocado!

Preventing your Avocado Spread from turning brown can help maintain its vibrant green color and appealing presentation. Here's how you can minimize browning:

Press plastic wraps directly onto the surface: To keep your Avocado Spread fresh, it’s best to create an airtight seal by placing a sheet of plastic wrap directly onto its surface. This will limit its exposure to air and slow down the oxidation process that causes browning. For extra protection, you could even add two layers of plastic wrap.

Store in an airtight container: Transfer the Avocado Spread to an airtight container to further minimize air exposure. Choose a container that is just the right size to minimize empty space, as oxygen can speed up browning.

Squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice: Before storing the spread, squeeze a small amount of fresh lemon or lime juice on top. Citric acid is a natural antioxidant that helps slow down the enzymatic browning process. Be sure to spread the juice evenly across the surface.

Keep refrigerated: Place the sealed container of Avocado Spread in the refrigerator promptly after making it. Cold temperatures slow the browning process and help preserve the spread’s color and freshness.

Use fresh ingredients: Starting with fresh, high-quality avocados, lime juice, and other ingredients can make a difference in preventing browning. Overripe or damaged avocados are more prone to browning, so select them carefully.

HOW TO MAKE THIS AVOCADO SPREAD:

Making this spread is incredibly easy – just blend all the ingredients together in a blender or food processor.

Let’s start by cutting the avocados in half, removing the pits, and scooping out the creamy flesh into a blender.

Don’t forget to add the garlic! It will enhance the flavor of the spread with a pleasant blend of sharpness and richness.

Add the Greek yogurt to the mixture to create a smooth texture and balance the richness of the avocado with a tangy flavor.

Squeeze the juice of a lime. Lime juice not only enhances the taste but also helps preserve the vibrant green color of the spread.

Add in the fresh cilantro, which adds a refreshing herbal aroma and a pop of freshness to the spread.

Season with salt & pepper to taste. Start with a small amount and gradually adjust according to your preferences.
